Swanton, Vermont Selected as a Roadmaps to Health Action Award Recipient
Swanton, VT – April 29, 2015 Swanton, Vermont is one of 20 communities nationwide to receive a Roadmaps to Health Action Award. The Action Awards are designed to strengthen the capacity of communities to make effective and lasting change. The award will be used to build on existing efforts by the Swanton Enhancement Project (SEP) to enrich the health and vitality of Swanton.
The Action Awards are part of the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R) program, a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. As a Roadmaps to HealthAction Award community, the Swanton Enhancement Project (SEP) will receive a year of direct, customized support from a Roadmaps to Health community coach and will be able to participate in learning network activities. The SEP will also receive $10,000 to accelerate the community’s work in building a Culture of Health.
“Receiving theRoadmaps to Health Action Award means a significant boost to efforts by our community members that have occurred during the last several years to build a healthy community where people want to live, work, learn and play.” said Reg Beliveau, Village Manager. “With this support we can advance our priorities identified through a recent Community Visit Process in Swanton, facilitated by the Vermont Council on Rural Development. There will be tremendous benefit to the newly created task forces on Economic Development Opportunities; Traffic, Bike and Walkability of the Downtown, Improved Access to Outdoor Recreation; Uniting the Community to Prevent Substance Abuse; and the Arts,” stated Joel Clark, Swanton Selectman and President of the Swanton Enhancement Project.
“The Roadmaps to Health Action communities are well-positioned to leverage the networking opportunities, coaching and funding this award offers to build on their existing momentum,” said Julie Willems Van Dijk, co-director of the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program. “These communities are committed to better health. We hope the next year of hands-on, coordinated support and learning enables these communities to take their work to the next level.”
The Roadmaps to HealthAction Award was developed in collaboration with Chapel Hill, NC based Active Living By Design and is part of the County Health Rankings & Roadmapsprogram. The Rankings show communities where they can improve, and the Roadmaps show communities how to take action to expand opportunities for healthier choices.
