TOWN OF SWANTON POSITION OPENING ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER (ACO) The Swanton Town Selectboard is seeking applicants for the position of Animal Control Officer. This is a part-time paid, appointed position, with mileage reimbursement. Required hours vary as needed, subject to animal control requirements. The successful candidate will be appointed to the position by the Selectboard. Town Animal Control Officer’s primary responsibilities are to enforce the Swanton Dog Ordinance, respond to all dog complaints, to impound stray dogs, dogs-at-large, and all unlicensed dogs. May occasionally involve dealing with a vicious dog. The Animal Control Officer is also responsible to coordinate the Town of Swanton’s annual rabies clinic. Requires caring for, feeding, and cleaning cage of an impounded dog. Requires a series of 3 rabies vaccinations paid for by the Town.

Under state law, the Selectboard recommends a candidate to fill the position to the Vermont Department of Health (DOH). The DOH then appoints the THO for a 3-year term. This is a paid, part-time position that serves the Town & Village as needed. Knowledge of health issues & enforcement experience are both pluses for this position. Duties will involve community engagement, program development, budget review and oversight, fundraising, and staff management. We are searching for a candidate with robust experience in community engagement, fundraising, program coordination, and staff management. Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; an ALA-accredited MLIS degree is preferred, with at least 2 years working in a library environment.
