Employment: Full-time position with benefits. Hired by the Selectboard after interviews. Reports to: Town of Swanton Road Foreman.
Job Goal: To provide the Town of Swanton a network of well maintained town highways, town equipment and town vehicles in an efficient and safe manner.
Essential Functions of Position: Operates town equipment and performs jobs assigned, including general hand labor, large truck driving, plowing and sanding, paving and patching, maintaining equipment, roadside mowing, brush and tree removal, general road construction and maintenance, general equipment safety checks.
Understands proper application, use, care and intent of assigned tools, trucks and other highway department equipment. Handles tools and equipment efficiently and effectively to accomplish job tasks. Must have the dexterity and strength to lift and carry heavy objects. Knowledge of and experience with basic heavy equipment repair is a plus.
Understands daily and on-going expectations of the road foreman including such items as work safety practices, preventative maintenance checks, recognition of roadway hazards, obstructions and sound highway construction practices. Must be willing to work long hours and off-schedule during winter months.
Possesses necessary skills at a variety of tools and equipment and is capable of performing entire job tasks with a minimum of supervision and guidance and ensures that all tasks are completed properly.
Exercises a high degree of safety consciousness. Immediately reports all safety related incidents, accidents or injuries to Road Commissioner or Town Administrator in his absence.
Utilizes tools and equipment properly and safely. Checks tools and equipment for safety exposures before and after each use. Returns all tools and equipment to proper storage and reports all defects and deficiencies to Road Commissioner. Responsible for providing a high regard for prudent safety practices for self, fellow workers and the public.
Must attend mandatory training sessions at workshops conducted by Vtrans and other public and private agencies.
Qualifications: Commercial Driver’s License is required (minimum CDL-B/CDL-A would be a plus). Must have a safe and excellent driving record. Must be a team player with an ability and willingness to learn and to apply oneself to the job at hand. Must pass mandatory pre-employment drug and alcohol screening tests plus random drug and alcohol screening tests while employed. Must have satisfactory DMV and criminal background check.
Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Working knowledge and operating experience in heavy construction equipment and winter maintenance equipment and their application in road construction and maintenance. In lieu of the education requirement, the Selectboard may consider past experience gained working in construction, road maintenance and associated employment.
